Products Used

Road/Rock Salt

Rock Salt (Sodium Chloride, NaCl) is more effective for ice that is already formed on the ground. Salt is easily distributed and a traditional tool in de-icing.

Ice Melt

Ice Melt can be applied either before ice is formed or after. Ice Melt lowers the freezing point of water, preventing ice buildup and breaking ice buildup into slush, which is more easily removed

Brine Solution

Brine can be applied with much more precision than salt, because it spreads as it is sprayed. Because of this, brine also causes less damage than salt. Brine is used as an effective pre-treatment solution that prevents the formation of snow on walkable surfaces.

Sand

Sand does not melt snow or ice. It sits on top and provides a gritty surface that improves traction and helps prevent slips and falls. The main drawback of sand is that it needs to be swept up between storms to prevent piles from building up. The benefits, however, outweigh the cons. Sand can be reused: sweep it up into a bucket for next year or incorporate it into your soil or garden. Sand is also harmless to the environment and does cause damage like salt can. Sand can also be used at any temperature, making it a flexible and effective solution.
